An article published by the Boston Globe reported that there are talks about demolishing the Bayside Expo center in favor of a $1b waterfront residential, retail and office development. The Bayside Expo center is apparently under some pressure with the newly built Boston Convention Center, which is less than four miles away.
Here are additional details on the development:
Preliminarily, they said the development could have roughly 1,000 new housing units facing the bay, a commercial section with a grocery store, dozens of shops and expansions of the existing office building and hotel on the end of the site closest to the JFK-UMass Red Line station. Connecting the two would be a “main street” with green space, sidewalks and both water and street access.
“We wanted to see whether we are just out on Mars with this, does it resonate with anyone out there or should we just stop right here.”

I have to say that the Bayside Expo Center may have been a great asset many years ago but with the new convention center, it’s time to move on. I don’t think it will be missed…being from Mass myselft, my biggest memory of the BEC is the $5 television and $1 radar detector you would see advertised on TV whenever the home electronics shows came to town…Boston is in a real great position to turn it’s water front around and hopefully rival that of a San Francisco. Between this development and Fan Pier, Boston is going to be an exciting place to be working in real estate and even more exciting for the tourists and residents…

It’s funny that you mention the electronic show because I think that is the only memory I have of the BSE as well. I agree that Boston is going to be an exciting place to be working in real estate. The city is finally utilizing the waterfront (downtown waterfront opened up, South Boston developments, etc) and transforming underdeveloped and rundown areas. It is exciting to watch.
